DAY 1: Rebuild & Re-Create your Resume

DAY 1: Rebuild & Re-Create your Resume

Most of us dread creating resumes or editing the darn thing. Do you agree with me?

But no worries, I am here to help. We all need a resume, whether it is for a job, an internship, applying to a school, etc. Why do you need a resume, you ask? It is a concise summary of your education, work/volunteer/internship experiences, and other qualifications relevant to your audiences needs.

Employers use resumes as a first impression and will use it to compare you to other candidates. NOTE: a good resume does not guarantee you a job; it allows you to be considered as part of a vast pool of candidates who applied for the position.

A resume demonstrates the years of experience, knowledge, capabilities that a candidate wants to highlight to employers. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your abilities and showcase your talents.

What does a perfect resume look like?

Here is one format that I love, and it keeps things simple:

  1. Format your work experience chronologically so that the reader can see organization qualities as well as follow your experience.
  2. Aim to fit your resume on two pages – unless you have more experiences that are relevant to the job, and you should limit it to two pages because it is a general overview of your skills and capabilities.
  3. AVOID using complicated templates as a basis for your resume because sometimes they can be difficult to alter and limits you from standing out if your resume looks just like everyone else's. (Remember, the person reading your resume is most likely reading soooooo many others.)
  4. Do not use CAPS, bolding, underlining, bullets, and indentation unless necessary.
  5. Do NOT use graphics or unusual fonts and colors to "dress up" your resume. It does not look professional, and you need to limit your space as well because you only have 1 page remember.
  6. It would be better to save your file as a pdf before submitting electronically so that it preserves the format.

Sections within your resume:

1. Contact information

Include your name and email address as well as the phone number and street address you would prefer to be contacted at

2. Introductory Statement

  • Keep the statement professional and do not write "Objective," such as "My objective is to find…." Statements.

Instead

Write about yourself in the third person, Ms. Bianchi, has 14 years of project management experience working on Health I.T projects,"

    • Check out my resume for inspiration

Ensure that your statement is accurate and holds true

3. Education

  • List your degrees from recent to oldest, with the official names of your school and year of graduation.
  • List your certification in alphabetical order
  • List the official names of the school you have attended

4. Work Experiences

  • List experiences in earliest to latest order.
  • Show the name of the organization, your title, and dates of involvement (MM/YY).
  • Be consistent in your formatting of each experience
  • Use bulleted phrases to describe each experience, which should demonstrate skills and capabilities – consider how your experiences show core work skills (communication/interpersonal skills, organization/time management/leadership, analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Use a professional and active voice

5. Internship, Co-curricular, and Volunteer Experience

  • List experiences that involve leadership or organizational responsibilities
  • Format the same way and be sure to demonstrate core work skills

6. Skills

  • This section is optional, but this includes additional language skills you possess or certifications/licenses
  • Include technology or software skills that are relevant to your career.
